Pinot Noir, Bacigalupi Vineyard, Russian River Valley, 2019
2019 was a great vintage here in Sonoma County. After a wetter than average winter and very wet spring, the vines were delayed in budbreak and bloom by about 2 or 3 weeks. Summer was quite warm but harvest was still delayed overall by a couple weeks on most blocks.
Bacigalupi is a storied family owned vineyard with quite a history in the Russian River Valley. We consider ourselves fortunate to have such a great partnership with them and to be able to procure some of their Pinot Noir grapes for this wine. A small crew hand picked each clone of grapes separately at 2 am. Once in the winery, we sorted and destemmed each clone and fermented them each in their own vessel. All the clones were fermented with native yeasts. After fermentation, the wine went straight to barrel where it aged for 11 months on primary lees before going to bottle.
Rich notes of cassis, cola, cherry, black pepper, clove, rose petal, fresh raspberry, and dried currant just overwhelm the senses on the nose. This is such an aromatic wine! The palate is equally beautiful with more fruit and spice notes and a lovely black cherry overtone. The wine has a graceful acidity that is quite delicious right now but will also allow it to age for several years.
