2019 Estate Zinfandel
CURRENT RELEASE!
2019 was a great vintage here in Sonoma County. After a wetter than average winter and very wet spring, the vines were delayed in budbreak and bloom by about 2 or 3 weeks. Summer was quite warm and the harvest was delayed overall by a couple weeks on most blocks.
Our estate zinfandel was handpicked starting at 4 am and processed while still icy cold. The grapes were destemmed and put whole-berry into a closed top tank and cold soaked for almost 8 full days to extract as much color and tannin from the skins as possible. After that, they were fermented for about two weeks and gently drained and pressed straight to a mix of new and used barrels where they completed malolactic fermentation. The wine was racked together once and bottled after 11 months of aging.
The nose of this wine starts with bright cherry pie filling and delicious all-butter pie crust aromas. Bright boysenberry notes and warm baking spices like all-spice, clove and a black cardamom linger on the nose. The palate is surprisingly juicy and lush with big, full tannins, fruit tones of fresh picked raspberries and cherry cordial. This is a delicious wine today but it will also age quite nicely for the next 5 or more years.
