2015 Old Vine Zinfandel Barrel Reserve
1 Loches French barrel
24 cases produced.
Dry Creek Valley
Limited production release. For this wine, winemaker Mike Gulyash worked with our French cooper to tailor one custom barrel created from wood sourced in the Loches Forest in the “Indie et Loire” region which resulted in just 23 cases of this extraordinary reserve Zinfandel. The oak grain tends to be very tight in this region and is highly prized, coming from trees that are near 120 years old. Once cut into staves, they are stacked and aged three years outdoors, leaching out much of the hard tannins for a softer perception in the mouth. Being tight grained, Mike calls for a long roast time with a medium fire to penetrate and caramelize slowly, altering the wood aromas dramatically and resulting in soft tannins, a luscious richness, notes of sweet spice, cinnamon and anise and a creaminess that reminds you of crème brulee, perfectly blending with the zinfandel fruit’s cherry, plum and soft pepper flavors.
